Ali Larijani
Biography
Ali Larijani was an Iranian politician who held some of the Islamic Republic's most senior offices over four decades. A veteran of the Iran–Iraq War with the Revolutionary Guards, he served as Iran's Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance (1992–1994), head of Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (1994–2004), and Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council (2005–2007), where he oversaw nuclear negotiations before resigning over policy disagreements. He was elected Speaker of Parliament in 2008, representing Qom, and held that post for twelve years until 2020. He ran for president in 2005 and was later disqualified from the 2021 and 2024 races by the Guardian Council. In 2025 he returned to government as Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council for a second term. He held a doctorate in Western philosophy from the University of Tehran and published academic work on Kant. He was killed in an Israeli airstrike on Tehran on March 17, 2026, during the 2026 Iran war, alongside his son Morteza.

Iyyaka na'budu wa iyyaka nasta'in.
You alone do we worship, and to You alone do we turn for help.
اهْدِنَا الصِّرَاطَ الْمُسْتَقِيمَ
Ihdina 's-sirata'l-mustaqim.
Guide us on the straight path,
صِرَاطَ الَّذِينَ أَنْعَمْتَ عَلَيْهِمْ غَيْرِ الْمَغْضُوبِ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا الضَّالِّينَ
Sirata'lladhina an'amta 'alayhim ghayri'l-maghdubi 'alayhim wa la'd-dallin.
