Every year, millions of lovers of Imam Hussain (AS) begin their journey from different cities across Iraq and beyond. Many pilgrims start from Najaf and walk nearly 80 kilometers to Karbala, while others travel from Basra and other distant regions, covering hundreds of kilometers on foot. Along the entire route, thousands of mawakib (service camps) provide free food, water, tea, medical care, accommodation, and even transportation to pilgrims. People of all ages come together to serve the visitors of Imam Hussain (AS), seeking blessings and honoring the sacrifice of Karbala. The walk ends at the holy shrine of Imam Hussain (AS) in Karbala on Arbaeen, forty days after Ashura, symbolizing love, loyalty, and devotion to the Ahlulbayt (AS).

The Friday Martyr’s Procession Established after the political transformation in Iraq following 2003, the Friday Martyr’s Procession is one of the largest and most revered processions (mawakib) on the road to Karbala. Originating from the far south of Iraq specifically from Dhi Qar Governorate. This grand procession makes its way each year towards the Holy City of Karbala, carrying the spirit of loyalty and sacrifice for Imam al-Hussain (AS). It consists of 74 organized groups operating under the name Ansar al-Hussain (Supporters of Hussain), and brings together over 60,000 mourners in unified mourning and devotion.
