Abbas Araghchi
Biography
Abbas Araghchi is an Iranian career diplomat who has served as Minister of Foreign Affairs of Iran since August 2024, under President Masoud Pezeshkian. He joined Iran's Foreign Ministry in 1989 and has held a wide range of posts over more than three decades, including Ambassador to Finland (1999–2003), Ambassador to Japan (2008–2011), Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs, and Deputy Foreign Minister for Asia-Pacific and Commonwealth Affairs. From 2013 to 2021, he served as Iran's chief nuclear negotiator under President Hassan Rouhani, leading Iran's delegation in the P5+1 talks that produced the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). He later served as Political Deputy at the Foreign Ministry and Secretary of the Strategic Council on Foreign Relations before becoming Foreign Minister in 2024. He is the author of "The Power of Negotiation" (2025).
