Sardar Azmoun

Sardar Azmoun (born 1 January 1995 in Gonbad-e Kavus, Golestan Province, Iran) is an Iranian professional footballer and his country's all-time leading goalscorer, widely regarded as the greatest Iranian footballer of his generation. Known as the "Iranian Messi" for his technical brilliance, movement, and goal-scoring instinct, he plays as a forward.

Early Life

Born in Gonbad-e Kavus — a city on the Turkmen Sahra plains of northeastern Iran near the Caspian coast — he demonstrated exceptional footballing talent from childhood. His mother is from the Turkmen ethnic community. He began his professional career at Saipa FC in Iran before moving to Russia at a young age.

Club Career

He played for Rubin Kazan before joining Zenit Saint Petersburg, where he became one of the most celebrated foreign players in Russian football history, winning multiple Russian Premier League titles. He was consistently among the top scorers in the league and developed a devoted following among Zenit fans. He joined Bayer Leverkusen in 2022, where he contributed to the club's historic 2023-24 Bundesliga title — the first in the club's history — under coach Xabi Alonso's unbeaten campaign.

International Career

For the Iranian national team, Azmoun is the all-time record goalscorer, having surpassed the previous record of Ali Daei. He has participated in multiple FIFA World Cups, including 2018 in Russia and 2022 in Qatar. At the 2022 World Cup, Iran reached the group stage and Azmoun was among the squad's key figures. He has been a consistent performer for Iran across more than a decade of international football.

Faith

A devout Twelver Shia Muslim, Azmoun frequently performs the sujud (prostration to God) after scoring goals and has spoken openly about how his faith is the foundation of his life. He has also shown moral courage off the pitch — in 2022, during Iran's widespread civil protests, he spoke out in support of the protesters despite significant professional and personal risk, a rare act of public dissent from an active Iranian international footballer.
