Cherif Mohamed Aly Aidara

Cherif Mohamed Aly Aidara is the leading Shia religious authority in Senegal and one of the most influential Shi'i figures in West Africa. Born in 1959 in Darou Hidjiratou, a village his father founded in the Kolda Region of southern Senegal, he is a sharif who traces his lineage to the Prophet Muhammad through Imam Ali and the Idrisid dynasty.

He was raised and educated in traditional Islamic scholarship under his father, Cherif Al-Hassane Aidara, a Mauritanian-born religious leader who had settled in Senegal in the late 1930s. He went on to pursue French-language education at the Alliance Française in Paris, and today is fluent in Arabic, English, French, Pulaar, and Wolof.

Aidara arrived to lead the Senegalese Shia community around 2000, at a time when it was small and largely hidden from public life. Under his leadership it grew into what he describes as the largest religious community in the country. In 2000 he founded the Mozdahir International Institute, an NGO that fuses Shia religious development with education, healthcare, agriculture, reforestation, renewable energy, and Islamic microfinance. Mozdahir has expanded from Senegal's Casamance region into Mali, Guinea-Bissau, Burkina Faso, and Ivory Coast, partnering with organizations such as the World Food Programme and building secondary schools, orphanages, cultural centers, and mosques across the region, including in Teyel and Foulamori. He also founded the village of Nadjaf Al Achraf.

He directs two radio stations, Radio Mozdahir FM — described as the only Shia radio station broadcasting in Senegal — and Radio Zahra FM, and has authored several French-language books on Islamic theology and finance. His organization holds formal diplomatic-status agreements with the governments of Senegal, Guinea-Bissau, and Cote d'Ivoire.

In public remarks he has emphasized that Ashura is a day of mourning for the martyrdom of Imam Hussein rather than a celebration, and has spoken about the pressures facing Senegal's Shia minority while affirming the community's resilience and continued growth.

His father, Cherif Al-Hassane Aidara (1917-2011), was a Mauritanian-Senegalese religious leader venerated in Darou Hidjiratou, where the Grand Al Hassanayni Mosque was later built in his honor and where he is buried; the village name means "the house of immigration." His brother, Cherif Habib Aidara, serves as mayor of Bonconto Commune.
