Muhammad Qaseem Umar

Muhammad Qaseem Umar, widely known as Qasim Umar Sokoto, was a Nigerian Shi'a teacher and prayer leader affiliated with the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), based in the northern city of Sokoto. Born into the well-known family of Alhaji Ummaru Sanda Gudu, a prominent local businessman who died in a 1980 plane crash, he was raised by his mother, Hajiya Hauwa'u Ahmad, and educated in his hometown of Sokoto before becoming a teacher and local religious leader within the movement.

On 9 January 2018, during an IMN demonstration in Abuja demanding the release of the movement's detained leader, Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky, Nigerian police opened fire on the protesters. Qasim was shot and seriously wounded; two other demonstrators were killed in the same incident. After 26 days of treatment at a private medical facility in Kano, he died of his injuries on 5 February 2018, and is regarded within the movement as a martyr (shaheed). His case is one of many documented instances of Nigerian security forces using lethal force against IMN demonstrators during the years of Zakzaky's detention.
