Mausoleum of the Tiflan-e-Muslim

The shrine of the Tiflan-e-Muslim ("the children of Muslim"), in Musayyib, Iraq, about 35 km from Karbala on the road toward Kadhimiya, holds the graves of Muhammad and Ibrahim, the two young sons of Muslim ibn Aqeel. Their father, Imam Hussain's cousin and envoy, had brought the boys with him to Kufa specifically so that his mission there would be read as peaceful rather than a prelude to war; after Muslim was betrayed and executed, the boys were imprisoned for roughly a year until a sympathetic jailer allowed them to escape. Seeking refuge, they were taken in by a woman whose husband, on discovering their identity, turned them over for the bounty offered by the Umayyad governor Ubayd Allah ibn Ziyad. He marched them to the bank of the Euphrates; the boys asked for time to finish their morning prayers before being beheaded, their bodies thrown into the river and their heads carried off as proof for the reward. The shrine that marks the site of their execution remains a well-known stop for pilgrims traveling the route between Karbala and the shrine of Imam Musa al-Kadhim in Kadhimiya.
