Mausoleum of Ja'far ibn Abi Talib

An Islamic religious complex in the Al-Mazar district near Karak, built around the graves of three companions killed in 629 CE at the Battle of Mu'tah, fighting a much larger Byzantine and Ghassanid force. The Prophet had named all three as successive commanders in case each fell: Zayd ibn Harithah first, then Ja'far ibn Abi Talib, then Abdullah ibn Rawahah. The Mamluk sultan Baybars commissioned the first mausoleums over the graves in the 13th century; the current religious complex, including a mosque and madrasa built around the separate mausoleums of Ja'far and Zayd, dates to a 1997 reconstruction sponsored under Jordan's King Hussein. Ja'far's tomb is enclosed in an ornate gold and silver zarih. The shrine was vandalized in May 2013 for permitting Shi'a pilgrims, though the damage was repaired within weeks.
